The man you love is about to serve brisket, and he's started narrating the bark. He'll explain the rub. He'll explain the stall. He'll explain how his smoker differs from a lesser man's smoker. Someone should be taking notes. Give the cookout the equipment to take notes.
- One comment-card box. Wooden, locking, visible slot, set within sight of the grill. The cards come pre-printed with three categories — OVERALL EXPERIENCE, WAIT TIME, HUMILITY — each scored one to five. You keep the key.
- One inspection clipboard, printed on North American Association of Unsolicited Grill Opinions letterhead. It inspects no food and holds no jurisdiction beyond confidence. It is consulted at intervals he can see, and something is always written down.
- One participation ribbon, satin, reading PARTICIPANT. Presented at serving time no matter how the brisket turns out, with a handshake of appropriate firmness.
The brisket will be good. It's always good — that was never in dispute and never the point, and the ribbon says PARTICIPANT anyway. He'll ask who's collecting the cards. Don't tell him.
