The Single Fry
She took one fry without asking. It hangs framed in her entryway now.

The Incident — At lunch, my friend Renee stated she was not hungry and declined to order. When my food arrived she took one fry — the long one, from the top — without asking. She maintains she asked. She did not ask.
The Response — I photograph my plate when it arrives; this is documented practice and predates the incident. The fry in question is clearly visible in frame. I had the image enlarged to 8×10, printed on archival paper, matted, and framed. A small brass plate on the frame reads THE LONG ONE, with the date. It was presented to her at her birthday dinner, wrapped, among the other gifts.
The Escalation — She hung it. Entryway, facing the door, with a picture light she purchased herself. Guests ask. She is obliged to explain, each time, what it is and what she did, and she does so with the fluency of a docent.
Current Friendship Status — Improved. She takes exactly one fry at every meal now, maintaining eye contact.
